Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this disaster.

Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping defense.
But then, you realize that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and gracefully all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was extremely late for school.
I sweating. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. was a catastrophe. I stay awake.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a true disaster.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from more info bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
